Postdoctoral position at UTRGV Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy

The Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy (CGWA) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for a postdoctoral position at the interface between Machine Learning, Gravitational Wave Astronomy, and Time-Domain Astrophysics.

The CGWA is a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and a founding member of the Transient Optical Robotic Observatory of the South collaboration (TOROS, toros.utrgv.edu). TOROS, funded by NSF Windows on the Universe program, operates a wide field of view telescope in the Argentine portion of the Atacama highlands.Applicants should have a strong interest in leading research efforts to develop the software pipeline for the project, particularly involving machine learning methods. The postdoc will also have ample opportunity to assist in the supervision of several undergraduate and graduate students involved in the CGWA Time Domain Astronomy group.We seek an ambitious young scientist with a PhD in physics, astrophysics or astronomy who is well versed in optical/near-infrared photometry (including the use of standard astronomical software packages) and has experience programming in Python.

Some experience in optical/near-infrared spectroscopy is also desirable.Appointments are for one year, with renewal for a second and third year contingent upon satisfactory progress. The position is available to start employment immediately but the actual starting date is negotiable.
