Postdoc position Error Signal Extraction at LAPP

Post-doctoralposition. Error Signal Extraction for Gravitational Wave Detector Control: Characterization and Performance Improvements (M/F)

The successful candidate will join the LAPP Virgo team and will participate in the study of the performance of the photodiode reading chain including digital demodulation which will be used for the O4 observation period (2023). These studies will make it possible to consider improvements for the following observation periods (run from 2026) and for the future gravitational wave detector Einstein Telescope:

  • participation in the definition of the benchmark for measuring the performance and noise level ofthe digital electronics and the clock distribution (both the current distribution and the distribution based on White Rabbit in preparation for the O5 run).
  • implementation of a simulation tool for the entire reading chain and possible sources of noise
  • comparison of data and simulations in order to understand the main sources of noise in the chain,which will make it possible to propose improvements in the design of this electronics for future developments of Virgo and for the future Einstein Telescope detector.
  • investigation and comparison with other solutions for demodulation, such as those used in LIGOdetectors for example.

The LAPP group is also involved in the design of Virgo's optical benches and plans to set up an optical bench suspended under vacuum at LAPP in order to develop various measurements. The first benchmarkwill consist in measuring the light scattered by different optics and in studying the different possible couplings which limit the sensitivity of the Virgo detector. The postdoc could participate in associated activities.

The position is based at LAPP, with the possibility of traveling occasionally to EGO to work directly on the Virgo detector.
