The Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute, AEI) in Hannover, Germany, has several PhD positions available in the area of "Precision Interferometry and Fundamental Interactions". If you are interested in experimental work, enjoy working in dynamic, interdisciplinary groups, are creative and motivated, and show initiative, we look forward to receiving your application. The deadline for full consideration is September 30, 2023.
This department’s research encompasses precision interferometry instrumentation for ground-based and space-based gravitational-wave observatories and laser-optical searches for fundamental interactions beyond the standard model.
The department Precision Interferometry and Fundamental Interactions has been established in August of 2022 and is led by Guido Müller. It’s research thrusts include work on the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), work on Beyond-LISA mission concepts, on Axion-Like Particle Searches (ALPS) and on Vacuum Magnetic Birefringence (VMB), the later two being located at DESY.
Research Topics and research environment:
One specific focus of the new department will be the development of a hardware-in-the-loop LISA testbed to generate as realistic LISA signals as possible to test the entire data analysis pipeline from photons to source parameters. For this work, we look for candidates with an analytical and detail-oriented mind and a strong interest in working with digital signal processing systems.
Space-based gravitational wave observatories beyond LISA require new concepts to overcome the many noise sources which limit LISA. Our group is developing and will soon test these new concepts in dedicated new experimental setups. This research area is an ideal opportunity for creative and highly motivated students who can think outside the box.
The department will also work on axion-like particle searches (ALPS) and studies of fundamental interactions such as vacuum magnetic birefringence (VMB). These experiments are highly sophisticated and complex laser interferometric experiments and ideal candidates have a strong interest in laser interferometry and/or quantum optics experiments.
To apply, please submit your application via our job portal here.
You will be asked to upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, university transcripts, a statement of past and future research activities and interest(s) of not more than 3 pages, a list of publications (if available) and your Master thesis (if available). Applicants will need to indicate the names of two referees for recommendation letters. Please fill in the contact information for the referees well before the deadline, so that reference letters can be received in time. Referees will receive an email with instructions on how to upload their letters. In case of problems with the application form, please contact jobs(at)aei.mpg.de.
Candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. The deadline for full consideration is September 30, 2023, including reception of reference letter. Applications will be considered until all positions are filled.
